Objective: Find a few objects which trigger a personal response placing together to form a still life.

I chose a porcelain figurine because it was owned by my grandmother. I also chose some books because reading has always been a really big part of my life. I decided to use the paper in landscape orientation and after trying different tools I used pencils and charcoal sticks. (I made sketches with biro first because I felt the figurine a bit cartoon-y with all the delicate but sharp edges. However the gentle lines and the nostalgic atmosphere of the old books somehow convinced me quickly to settle on using softer tools.

I had really struggled with the boy…I did not want the drawing to be too dark or being out of proportion and I feel I could have made this part more accurate.
Overall I think this piece taught me a lot about shadows and proportion. I was not happy with the boy because the reflected light on his body did not turn out as I expected but I enjoyed to work on it.

The final piece – Porcelain figurine with books
